Pre-Handwriting Patterns

Practising pre-cursive patterns such as straight lines (vertical, horizontal), curves, tunnels, waves and zig zags teaches children the correct directional pushes and pulls of the pencil required to form letters. Children in Nursery and Reception are given lots of opportunities in continuous provision and during adult directed tasks to practise pre-cursive patterns needed for forming letters.

Handwriting rhymes to encourage correct letter formation at home

Printed Handwriting

We use Nelson handwriting as our chosen scheme in school, but it is recommended that children have a rhyme to make the formation of the letter easier to remember. As we are a Read, Write, Inc school we have chosen to use their rhymes with the pupils as they match the same formation as Nelson. Children have daily handwriting lessons, as well as being taught it in other areas of the curriculum such as RWI.

Here are some examples of pre-handwriting patterns that you could practise with your child at home.
